Students and volunteers started the “Stuff-a-Bus” program, or Llenen el Bus, in Spanish with the goal of reaching 15 thousand backpacks by August 25, that is, five thousand backpacks more than last year. Last week they visited the Bowie Town Center, where dozens of people gathered to deliver their donations.
“It is an excellent opportunity for the Prince George’s community to support the school system,” said Alexander Wallace, Board of Education member of District 7. The Prince George’s school system has about 130,000 students, and although within the school supplies that are collected during the events are red, blue, yellow and green backpacks, rulers, notebooks and rubber and # 2 pencils for elementary schools.
In the secondary area students need notebooks to take notes, black and blue pens, highlighters and folders with pockets. This Saturday, August 11, donations are going to be received at the Wegman’s store, located at 9001 McHugh Drive, in the community of Lanham.
Those who need a backpack for their children or students can apply to receive one electronically on the PGCPS website, and have until August 16. The school supplies will be distributed at the party that the school system has organized for August 25 at Bowie Stadium, Maryland, which will start at 9 in the morning and will run until 2:00 in the afternoon.
